LEAF's Recycling Plastics Program
One main responsibility of LEAF is the recycling of plastics in the campus dormitories. Currently plastics are recycled in sseven out of the eight dorms: Asbury, Skeath, Weasly, Williams, Forest, Crever, and Rich. In the academic center there are also recycling bins on every floor. Currently, approximately thirty pounds of plastics are recycled weekly. The production of plastic containers has increased greatly and currently surpasses glass containers with an average of 48 billion plastic containers and 36 billion glass containers (Container Recylcing Institue 2005). Plastic waste is a currently a large portion of debris. For these reasons, LEAF finds it important that the college recycle plastics in addition to glass and aluminum. Student involvement is imperative to this effort to reduce plastic waste. Currently twelve students are responsible for recycling the plastics and more will be needed next year when we expand to include the other dorms.
